Israel Defense Force May Receive a New Assault Automatic Rifle ‘Arad’
TEL AVIV, (BM) – Israel Defense Forces in the near future may receive a new rifle weapon. Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) introduced a new assault (automatic) rifle of its own design and production of “Arad”, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, quoting Topwar.
As follows from the materials presented by the company, the new rifle is created according to the classical scheme and looks like an American AR-15 rifle. At the same time, the rifle uses a gas vent system with a short piston stroke, rather than a direct impact on the bolt group like the AR-15. Two-position controller with settings allows you to use weapons with a silencer. The barrel is quick-detachable and can be replaced by the user in a matter of seconds.
The rifle has a caliber of 5.56×45 mm, but it is assumed that further options will be released for the cartridge of the caliber 7.62×51 mm, 6.8 Remington SPC and 6.5 × 55 Creedmor. In the initial version, the barrel length is 292, the weight is 2,85 kg, but long-barrel variants with a barrel length of 419 and 508 mm are also planned. The rifle allows you to use any stores standard NATO MIL STD 5.56 steel, aluminum or polymer.
According to the developers, the rifle is designed for both right-handed people and left-handed shooters. Also noted is the stamina of the barrel, which is 20 thousand shots. On the body are Picatinny rails for installing various sights.
IWI indicates that the new rifle was created in collaboration with the Israeli security forces, which participated in all stages of the development of weapons. At present, the Arad assault rifle is participating in a tender by the Israeli military for the supply of weapons for special forces. In case of victory in the competition, IWI will receive a contract for 8 thousand rifles.
