Unidentified aircraft targets IRGC and Hezbollah military camp in Iraq
An unmanned aircraft dropped explosives on a base belonging to Iran-linked Shiite paramilitary groups in northern Iraq on Friday, killing at least one person, Arab News reported.
The Iraqi military said in a statement a drone had dropped a grenade onto the base in northern Salahuddin province, wounding at least two people, but gave no further details.
Paramilitary sources in the area and a Baghdad-based paramilitary leader said one person had been killed in the attack which took place in the early hours of Friday morning.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
A security source said two explosions hit the base, one targeting an ammunition depot belonging to an Iranian-backed group.
The incident took place amid heightened tension between the US and Iran.
Turkish soldier killed, six wounded in operation in Iraq’s north
A Turkish soldier was killed and six wounded on Friday in an operation in northern Iraq during clashes with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the Turkish defence ministry said, Reuters reported.
The Turkish military last week launched what it described as the second stage of a campaign it has dubbed “Operation Claw” in northern Iraq. The campaign was first started on May 27 in northern Iraq’s Hakurk region, targeting the PKK with artillery and air strikes as well as operations by commando brigades.
The PKK militant group is based in northern Iraq, notably in the Qandil region to the south of Hakurk. Turkey says Operation Claw aims to destroy shelters and caves used by the PKK and “neutralise” its members – a term it commonly uses to refer to deaths, but also those wounded or captured.
The defence ministry said two PKK members were killed in air strikes in northern Iraq on Friday in a separate operation.
Russian missile frigate hits target in Black Sea drills off Crimea
The combat crew of the Admiral Makarov frigate hit a target in the Black Sea, firing a Shtil surface-to-air missile system during drills, Black Sea Fleet Spokesman Captain 2nd Rank Alexei Rulev said on Friday, TASS reported.
“Under the drill’s scenario, the personnel of the Utyos [coastal defense] system were assigned with the task of detecting a notional enemy’s naval group and shooting it down with missiles. In turn, the crew of the Admiral Makarov frigate was required to take the bearings of the missile using detection tools and strike it with the Shtil surface-to-air missile system,” the spokesman said.
