Estonia contracts LMT Defense for new rifles

The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI) has signed a contract with LMT Defense for the supply of a new customised standard rifle for the Estonian defence forces, Shephard Media reported.

The contract was signed by Priit Soosar, head of the procurement department at the ECDI, and Karl Lewis, founder and CEO of the weapons company, while the signing was also attended by Estonia’s ambassador to the US, Jonatan Vseviov.

The rifle selected is the LMT MARS family of rifles, including the AR 15 type and AR 10 type rifles in addition to 40mm Grenade Launchers.

Estonia will initially be acquiring 16,000 customised automatic firearms as well as accessories, and the first weapons will arrive in Estonia at the beginning of 2020 to be used by the active service scouts battalion.

After that, conscripts and reservists of the 1st and 2nd infantry brigades and members of the voluntary defence league will also receive the weapons.

Within the framework of the procurement, Estonia’s police and border guard and its ministry of justice will also be receiving the new rifles.

‘For our troops, as well as to our reservists, the rifle is the most important weapon, and with the contract signed today the defence forces will receive a new generation of rifles, which are accurate, ergonomic, reliable and modern,’ Kusti Salm, director of the ministry’s defence investments planning department, and the soon-to-be director of the ECDI, said.

Belarus signs contract with Russia for additional T-72B3s

Belarus has signed a contract with Uralvagonzavod for the modernisation of 11 T-72B main battle tanks (MBTs) to the T-72B3 standard, according to a 25 June statement released from the Belarusian Ministry of Defence (MoD), Jane`s reported.

The press statement says the contract was signed as a result of a meeting at the Army 2019 exhibition held in Kubinka, Russia, from 25-30 June, and that the vehicles will be delivered between now and next year.

The press release adds that a contract was also signed with Russian aircraft manufacturer Irkut, covering the installation of Talisman self-protection systems onto Belarusian Yak-130 aircraft.

The T-72B3 is an economical upgrade designed to turn older T-72 MBTs into a viable platform for the modern battlespace. It provides the vehicle with a Sosna-U sight that includes a thermal imaging channel as well as improved armour and a modestly improved 125 mm main gun.

Belarus has already received at least 24 T-72B3 obr.2016 vehicles, which have a more powerful engine and further improved armour over the T-72B3. It is unclear whether the vehicles referred to in the latest press release will be at this standard.

Typhoon jets collapse Islamic State tunnels

According to the Ministry of Defence, although the liberation by the Syrian Democratic Forces of Baghuz Fawqani in March 2019 deprived Islamic State of the last remaining territory held by them in Syria and Iraq, ‘constant vigilance has been maintained to ensure that the terrorists are unable to regain a foothold’.

To this end, Royal Air Force and other coalition aircraft have flown daily missions to support partner forces on the ground, UKDJ reported.

According to the MoD, on Sunday the 19th of May, a pair of Typhoon jets, based at RAF Akrotiri, were tasked to assist the Iraqi security forces with the destruction of a tunnel wherein a group of Daesh were reported to have established themselves.

“Our aircraft carefully checked the area, in the hills to the south-west of Mosul, for any signs of civilian activity that could be placed at risk, before conducting a precision attack with a pair of Paveway IV guided bombs which successfully destroyed the entrance to the tunnel.”
