Exercise of S-400 in Crimea; Turkish Tanks in Cyprus; NATO Conducting Patrol in the Black Sea
MOSCOW, ANKARA, BRUSSELS, (BM) – Your briefly report on July 04 in last eight hours from BulgarianMilitary.com news team:
S-400, Pantsyr air defense crews strike enemy cruise missiles in Crimea drills
The crews of S-400 long- and medium-range surface-to-air missile systems and Pantsyr medium-range missile/gun launchers practiced striking a notional enemy’s cruise missiles in Crimea drills amid NATO’s Sea Breeze naval maneuvers, TASS reported, according the press office of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet statement.
“The combat crews of S-400 ‘Triumf’ surface-to-air missile systems and ‘Pantsyr ‘air defense missile complexes from the Southern Military District’s Air Force and Air Defense Army held drills to search for and strike air targets. During the drills, the personnel practiced missions to detect, track and destroy a notional enemy’s cruise missiles,” the press office said in a statement.
Notional cruise missiles were electronically simulated. Also, the notional missiles were assigned different flight speed and altitude parameters, which complicated the task for air defense crews to strike the targets, the statement says.
“The crews of ‘Triumf’ and ‘Pantsyr’ surface-to-air missile launchers successfully accomplished their assignment thanks to the specifics of radar systems, the functions of tracking targets, the combined missile/gun armament and the versatility of striking targets,” the press office reported.
42 German Leopard-2A4 tanks illegally to occupied Cyprus
As the klieg lights of international attention were turned toward Turkey’s illegal activity in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus, Ankara in a secret operation transported 42 German Leopard-2A4 supertanks tanks to Kythrea in Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus, In.gr reported.
The tanks along with their ammunition were transported from the Turkish city of Edirne by transport ship.
The tanks belong to Turkey’s First Army in the Evros region, where all Turkish Army tanks with 120mm projectiles are kept (the Leopard 2A4 and the Israeli M-60T Sabra) along with modernised Leopard-1T tanks with 105mm projectiles.
Transfer violates US, German bans
It should be noted that both the US Congress and the German government have forbidden the transfer to Cyprus of weapons systems that they have constructed.
Ankara has flouted those decisions and ever more frequently uses American-made weapons systems (tanks, missiles, cannons, and personal military equipment).
NATO Conducting Routine Patrol in the Black Sea
Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) arrived in the Black Sea yesterday to conduct a routine patrol to enhance interoperability with Allies and build on cooperation with NATO Partners, the NATO`s website reported.
SNMG2 is led by Commodore Josée Kurtz of the Royal Canadian Navy from the Group’s flagship, Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Toronto. The group also includes Turkish frigate TCG Turgutreis and British frigate HMS Duncan, which transited into the Black Sea with HMCS Toronto. There they are joining with Romanian frigate ROS Regele Ferdinand as well.
“Patrolling the Black Sea is a great way to re-assemble the Group and integrate under new leadership,” said Commodore Kurtz. “This is an excellent opportunity for our sailors to hone their skills, practice working together, while also reinforcing the strong NATO bonds that link our Allied and Partner nations together.”
With three Allied nations bordering the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey, a number of Allied ships regularly operate in the Black Sea. The Standing Naval Forces also conduct regular patrols in the international waters of the Black Sea enhancing Allied ability to work together in the maritime domain.
During the group’s patrol in the Black Sea, SNMG2 plans to conduct a port visit to NATO Partner Ukraine, and participate in exercise Sea Breeze, co-hosted by the United States and Ukraine. While not a member of NATO, Ukraine is a highly valued partner to NATO, contributing to NATO operations and regularly exercising together in a demonstration of Ukraine’s strong commitment to international security.
Following the completion of Sea Breeze, the group will continue on to Bulgaria to participate in exercise Breeze before departing the Black Sea.
