Iran Has Developed Highly Capable Surface-to-air Missile (SAM) Systems
LONDON, (BM) – The shooting down of a US Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle on 20 June appears to have confirmed that Iran has developed highly capable surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems in recent years, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, quoting Jane`s.
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the incident, saying the Global Hawk was shot down near Kuh Mubarak on Iran’s Gulf of Oman coast after it entered Iranian territory without identifying itself. It released a video purportedly showing the engagement, with a RAAD 3 Khordad TELAR self-propelled SAM system launching a missile at night.
There are no fixed SAM sites within range of the shootdown location, lending credence to the claim that a mobile system like the RAAD 3 Khordad was used in the engagement.
On May 2014 the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC-AF) unveiled four different configuration of Raad air defense system: 3rd Khordad TELAR which is equipped with Taer-2B missiles, a phased-array radar and is able to control two launchers; Tabas TELAR which features a white dome radar and uses Taer-2A missiles; Alam al hoda launcher is equipped with electro-optical tracking systems; and Raad-2 which has a new wheeled launcher and uses electro-optical systems on separate vehicles with a range of 80 km.
According to Fars news agency the Raad is designed to confront fighter jets, cruise missiles, smart bombs, helicopters and drones. The system is also designed specially for US fighters.
BulgarianMilitary.com recalls also, that on June 10 this year Iran presented its own missile defence system Khordad 15. According to Minister of Defence, Brigadier General Amir Hatami, the system is capable of finding various targets, including military aircraft and unmanned vehicles, at a distance of 150 kilometers.
The minister asserts that the stealth aircraft become visible to the new Iranian system within 85 kilometers, and it can destroy them within a 45 km radius.
