Special Royal Marine force heads to Gulf to protect British ships

Royal Marines are being sent to the Gulf to protect British warships as Iran and the West come closer to a possible conflict, following attacks on two oil tankers last week, The Times reports.

Military sources said that 100 marines from 42 Commando, based near Plymouth, would form a rapid reaction force, Special Purpose Task Group 19. They will operate from navy ships patrolling the region from Britain’s new naval base in Bahrain.

Their deployment comes as British military and intelligence officials join an international investigation into last week’s events involving oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, which America and Britain blamed on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Turkish outpost in Syria shelled from Syrian government forces area

A Turkish observation post in Syria’s Idlib region was attacked with mortar fire and shelling from an area controlled by Syrian government forces, causing damage but no casualties, Reuters reports, according the Turkish Defence Ministry statement on Sunday.

The ministry said its forces immediately retaliated with heavy weapons and it made representations to Moscow over the incident, the second attack of its kind within a week.

“It is impossible for us to tolerate the regime’s harassment targeting our soldiers. We will put them in their place,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in a televised speech in the southern Turkish province of Hatay, bordering Syria.

Yemen’s Houthis launch new attack on Saudi Arabia’s Abha airport

Yemen’s Houthi movement launched a new drone attack targeting the Abha regional airport in southern Saudi Arabia, Reuters reports.

There was no immediate Saudi confirmation of the attack.

The Houthis have launched several strikes targeting Abha since last week, when a missile attack on the airport wounded 26 people. On Saturday, the group said it launched drone attacks on Abha and Jizan, another airport in southern Saudi Arabia.
