PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Your evening news report on June 12 from news team:

Syria says Israel strikes strategic hilltop near Golan, causing damage

Israel carried out a missile attack on a strategic hill in Syria overlooking a frontier zone between the countries early on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

It said damage was caused to Tal al-Hara, in the Daraa governorate near the occupied Golan Heights, and that Syrian air defences shot down several missiles. Israel used “electronic warfare” to disrupt radars during the attack, SANA added.

Israeli officials declined to comment on the incident. They have acknowledged past strikes in Syria targeting what they said were deployments or arms transfers by Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah forces helping Damascus beat back rebels.

Turkey says U.S. letter on F-35s not in line with spirit of alliance

Turkey on Wednesday criticised a letter from Washington on Ankara’s eventual removal from the F-35 fighter jet programme, saying the language used did not suit the spirit of alliance between the two NATO allies, Reuters reported.

Writing to Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar last week, U.S. acting Secretary of Defence Patrick Shanahan outlined how Turkey would be pulled out of the F-35 programme unless Ankara changes course from its plans to purchase the Russian S-400 missile defence system.

Akar, cited by his ministry in a statement, said Ankara was working on a response to the letter and that it would be sent to the United States in the coming days.

Boeing receives Chinook funding

Boeing has received a $10 million contract modification to support the US Army’s CH-47F Block II Engineering and Manufacturing Development programme, Shephard reported.

The company was issued with a low rate initial production notice by the US Army in January, which could see the service buy up to 14 CH-47F Chinook Block II aircraft between FY2021 through to FY2022. The army has plans to upgrade more than 500 Chinooks to the new configuration.

Work on this contract will run through July 2021.
