If Bulgaria Acquires the F-16, It Will Enter Into Other NATO Plans, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Said
SOFIA, (BM) – The F-16 Block 70 fighter aircraft deal with the United States has not yet been agreed and Bulgaria will try to get maximum discount, learned BugarianMilitary.com.
“Nothing is over. We are bargaining for a maximum reduction in the aircraft prices in order to have the most reliable aviation. Because when you have a high class of fighter aircraft, then you enter into other NATO plans. For example, all in NATO know our frigate and where there are exercises, it is always there,“ Boyko Borissov told journalists.
It is expected that with the acquisition of the F-16 the Bulgarian combat aviation will finally become compatible with NATO and will participate in more allied exercises.
Bulgaria is expecting to receive from the United States within days a draft contract for the purchase of 8 machines, with government expectations for a price of BGN 2.1 billion in it, and in the subsequent negotiations the price to be reduced to BGN 2 billion.
“There are requirements – if we want to be in NATO, 2% of GDP must go for armament. If you want to be a member of NATO, you must have a reliable security system. So, we buy and bargain,” the prime minister added.
The modernization of the Air Force is the most expensive military project, but Minister of Finance, Vladislav Goranov, said a day ago that Bulgaria could afford to pay at once. The government hoped to pay it in installments, but it was difficult to negotiate a profitable financial scheme. During the negotiations with the US, a state loan option was being discussed, but the Cabinet obviously supposes that things can go in a different direction.
