Russia Upgrading Il-80 and Il-82 Planes; ‘Emergency’ Arms Deal; IDF Destroys Attack Tunnel
PANAGYURISHTE (BGM) – Russia has wrapped up its experimental design work on upgrading airborne command posts based on Ilyushin Il-80 and Il-82 planes and is re-equipping operational aircraft, TASS reported.
“Now we have started modernizing airborne command posts based on the Il-80 and Il-82. The [Polyot Research and Production] Enterprise is the chief developer of the onboard communications and control system and has successfully wrapped up its experimental design work on its upgrade,” the defense official said during his visit to the Polyot defense manufacturer.
The State Department announced that the Trump administration would bypass Congress to greenlight 22 arms deals worth more than $8 billion to Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, Defense One reported.
“Delaying this shipment could cause degraded systems and a lack of necessary parts and maintenance that could create severe airworthiness and interoperability concerns for our key partners, during a time of increasing regional volatility,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.
The IDF on Thursday announced it had completed the destruction of a Hezbollah attack tunnel crossing into Israeli territory from Lebanon, Israel Defense reported.
The attack tunnel was exposed by the IDF last January as part of Operation Northern Shield and was thoroughly investigated since. It was described by the military as “the longest and most significant” subterranean passage found in the effort.
The IDF said the tunnel – one of six found during the operation – was the flagship tunnel of Hezbollah’s tunneling effort, in which the Shi’ite terror organization invested the most resources and efforts. It was equipped with advanced infrastructure for electricity, ventilation and communications systems. The tunnel’s infrastructure allowed for a prolonged stay of terrorists inside, efficient excavation capabilities and mobility of operatives.
