Russia Will Modernize 12 Frigates Each Carrying 48 Cruise Missiles On Board
MOSCOW, the Russian Federation (BulgarianMilitary.com) – Russia is planning to build 12 modernized frigates under the 22350M project, each of which will be capable of carrying 48 Caliber, Onyx and Zircon cruise missiles on board, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
“The main flagship of the series is scheduled to be provided to the Navy in 2027,” a source from the shipbuilding industry said on Thursday, quoted by TASS.
According to him, “By the end of 2019, will be completed a technical project for a ship with a displacement of 7,000 tons capable of carrying 48 Caliber, Onyx and Zircon cruise missiles on board, which will be handed over to the customer as part of the already new state armament program,” said the source, continuing that “It is planned to build 12 such frigates, 11 of which will be handed over to customers within the framework of the already new state armament program,” he concluded.
According to the source’s opinion, the new frigates will also be equipped with a Poliment-Redut air defence missile system provided with up to 100 missiles, anti-submarine and torpedo weapons.
BulgarianMilitary.com has no official confirmation of the above-mentioned information from the source cited, quoted by TASS.
Earlier, a source from the military-industrial complex told TASS that the Northern Design Bureau had begun to develop project documentation for the modernized frigates of the 22350M project. He noted that the water displacement of the frigates was planned to increase to 7,000 tons, while the maximum shipload of cruise missiles on board was up to 48 units. Moreover, the new frigates should receive a unified, universal, automated fire control system for all types of ship’s weapons.
At present, the main frigate of the 22350 Admiral Gorshkov base project is in the operational staff of the Russian Navy and two other frigates are under construction. The water displacement of these frigates is much smaller than the one planned under the project above, and each frigate can now carry 16 cruise missiles on board.
