Russia’s Latest AGS-40 Grenade Launcher to be Adapted for Combat Robotics

Techmash Group, which is a part within the state-owned Rostec Corporation, is currently exploring the opportunities for arming robotized ground-based systems with this type of grenade launcher. Furthermore, the Russian weapons manufacturer is evaluating the potential and expediency of adapting it and for UAVs, Rostec’s industrial director of the cluster of conventional armaments, ammunition and special chemistry Sergei Abramov explains.

On Monday, Russia’s news agency TASS, citing the director, reported that Rostec was working in this direction with all of its enterprises, including Techmas, looking at how to maximally utilize the potential of their items.

After the AGS-40’s operational evaluation is held and its results shown in the troops are familiar, the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Frderation is expected to take a decision whether to launch the serial purchases of the grenade launcher.

The Rostec official specified that, once this process was over, the rearming of the troops with the latest grenade launchers would begin in a planned manner. It will happen in accordance with Russia’s state armament program through 2027. At the same time, they are offered for export by Russia.

The Russian Defence Ministry intends to replace the AGS-30 and AGS-17 ‘Plamya’ grenade launchers currently in service with the troops, with the 40mm automatic grenade launcher 6S19 AGS-40 Balkan. The caseless 40mm grenades that AGS-40 Balkan uses, are similar to the smaller VOG-25 grenades. Upon ignition, the gases from the propellant charge exit the base of the grenade thus pressurizing the chamber and propelling the grenade out of the barrel.  Launcher’s firing pin doubles as a gas piston to cycle the action. The latest version exceeds the range capability of its predecesors by 25% while its capacity has been doubled.
