Lockheed Martin, Diehl and Saab Will Counter Together Short and Medium-Range Threats
ABU DHABI, the United Arab Emirates (BulgarianMilitary.com) – On Monday (18th February 2019, during IDEX/NAVDEX 2019, it became clear that Lockheed Martin, Diehl Defence and Saab will counter together current and emerging short and medium-range threats through the Falcon air defence weapon system, BulgarianMilitary.com
Scott Arnold, Lockheed Martin vice president and deputy for Integrated Air and Missile Defence, commented, “Our international customers are looking for the next generation short and medium range air defence solution. Falcon is threat driven and ready now. Falcon is a great example of working with our customers to identify potential gaps and find rapid-response solutions to take on today’s evolving threats.”
The Falcon provides a technologically advanced solution against threats such as fixed and rotary winged aircraft capable of delivering ordnance at extended range, unmanned aerial systems carrying lethal payloads, and cruise missiles that can attack from any direction.
The Falcon weapon system combines Diehl’s 40-kilometre range Infra-Red Imaging System Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled (IRIS-T) SLM interceptor and vertical launcher, Saab’s 360-degree AESA Giraffe 4A radar through Lockheed Martin’s flexible SkyKeeper command and control battle manager. The system can be easily integrated into any air operations centre thanks to its open architecture, which allows that.
The above combination of elements makes the Falcon the only integrated short and medium-range missile defence system in the world that features capabilities required to defeat current and emerging air threats. In particular, Lockheed Martin’s SkyKeeper command and control battle manager provides commanders with unique situational awareness with real-time early warning of incoming threats and improved engagement solutions for critical decision making. The Diehl IRIS-T SLM is a highly manoeuvrable interceptor fired from a 360-degree vertical launcher that can engage multiple targets simultaneously in various weather conditions. The Giraffe 4A AESA radar of Saab delivers high discrimination capabilities and features gallium nitrate technology for detecting and tracking both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft and drones, while simultaneously featuring an Automatic Sense & Warn functionality.
