Northrop Grumman Received a $59 Million Contract for the EMD phase of the EGI-M

WOODLAND HILLS, California, The United States ( – Northrop Grumman Corporation revealed yesterday (11th February 2019) that it has received from the U.S. Air Force a $59 million contract for the EMD phase (engineering and manufacturing development phase) of the Embedded Global Positioning System (GPS) /Inertial Navigation System (INS)-Modernization, or EGI-M, technology, learned

The approval for proceeding to the EMD phase comes after the Department of Defence approved Milestone B in October last year. Under the EMD phase contract, Northrop Grumman will develop the critical hardware and software design for the EGI-M, build hardware for integration and qualification, generate safety and civil certification documentation, qualify the new EGI-M systems to rigorous military standards, and build production units for platform testing.

The EGI-M system is based upon modular and truly open systems architecture. It will provide support for the rapid insertion of new capabilities and adaptability based on specific platform requirements. In addition, the upgraded navigation system will involve new generation GPS receivers that securely and accurately transmit the new military signals for space (M-Code). The design of the EGI-M allows easy integration into various platforms across all of the services. Exportable versions will also be developed for the needs of international customers. F-22 and E-2D are the lead platforms for EGI-M.
