The Israeli Air Force Will Soon Begin the Installation of a Collision Avoidance System on Its Helicopters
JERUSALEM, Israel (BulgarianMilitary.com) – The Israeli air force (IAF) will soon begin the installation of a collision avoidance system on its helicopters, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
The prototype of the system has been tested by the (IAF) Flight test squadron in the Tel Nof airbase.
The capability is based on an application installed in a system utilized by every IAF aircraft and will be integrated in the IAF Helicopter Division as part of a system update.
On 4 February 1997, when two Israeli Air Force transport helicopters ferrying Israeli soldiers into Israel’s “security zone” in southern Lebanon collided in mid-air, killing all 73 Israeli military personnel on board.
Since then many sensors have been installed to avoid collision accidents but the need for better ones continues.

An IAF source explained that each of the system’s notifications has a timecode, signifying when it was sent.
He added that according to this information, the pilots can measure the range between helicopters “The helicopters are notified with a beep which increases in volume”

The first stage of the test was a ground test, as part of which one helicopter was airborne while another remained on the ground. Its goal was to examine the system’s reaction to the helicopters and its efficiency. “The first stage showed us that the system had great potential. The second stage requires two helicopters in the air. If it is successful, the system will undergo an evaluation in the 124th Squadron, which operates the Black Hawk helicopter. After that, the system will become operational”
