The Royal Australian Air Force Tests Its Capabilities at Exercise Red Flag Nellis 19-1

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, the USA (BulgarianMilitary.com) – On 28th January 2019 the Australian Department of Defence announced that the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) has deployed more than 370 personnel and 8 aircraft to participate in the world’s most complex air warfare training at Exercise Red Flag 19-1 (from 22nd January to 15th February 2019) at Nellis Air Force Base, the United States, learned BulgarianMilitary.com

Air Commander Australia, Air Vice-Marshal Steve Roberton commented, “Royal Australian Air Force will train with the United States Air Force (USAF), United States Navy and the Royal Air Force in a complex reconstruction of a modern battlespace,” underlining that lots of important benefits will be gained thanks to the participation of Australia in that event.

“Not only are we learning from our partners and how we can best operate with each other, we are continuing our strong relationships that will enhance and strengthen our coalition into the future,” said Air Vice-Marshal Roberton.

Roberton also revealed the participants in the exercise on the part of Australia, “Up to six F/A-18A Classic Hornets from Number 77 Squadron, one E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft from Number 2 Squadron and one AP-3C (Electronic Warfare) Orion aircraft from Number 10 Squadron.”

Roberton explained that, “Air Force personnel will deploy to support the aircraft, operate an Australian Task Group Headquarters, augment the Combined Air Operations Centre with our coalition partners, provide cyber capabilities, and establish a Control and Reporting Centre.”

Australia is a regular participant in the Exercise Red Flag, which was established in 1975.

The Exercise Red Flag is a two-week advanced aerial combat training exercise held several times a year with a number of domestic and international participants. It hosted by the USAF 414th Combat Training Squadron by the United States Air Force. Its purpose is to provide realistic air-combat training for military pilots and other flight crew members from the United States, NATO and other allied countries.
