HENSOLDT Performed Successful Tests with Its UAV Collision Avoidance Radar System

Ulm, Germany (BulgarianMilitary.com) – The global pioneer of technology and innovation in the area of defence and security electronics, HENSOLDT, announced on 16th January 2019 that the company has performed successful flight tests with its collision avoidance radar system developed for UAVs, learned BulgarianMilitary.com

The flight tests were performed on behalf of the German procurement authority BAAINBw (Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr, in English: Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support) in collaboration with the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Brunswick, Germany. The radar demonstrated its capabilities in a real setting and the results, which were previously achieved in ground tests, were confirmed. During the tests, which took several hours, the radar was installed in a Dornier Do 228 of the DLR. The HENSOLDT radar system successfully detected the test aircraft approaching at different angles and altitudes. A second series of test flights is scheduled for the coming year.

HENSOLDT has developed a demonstrator of a detect-and-avoid radar system that involves the most advanced radar technology to detect objects along the UAV flight path and warn about any threat of collision thanks to accurate evaluation of the flight direction. The sensor has been designed for improving safety in military and civilian air traffic and it can also be used as a weather radar system.

The HENSOLDT detect-and-avoid radar system features state-of-the-art AESA technology (Active Electronically Scanned Array). That technology allows several detection tasks to be performed simultaneously and thanks to it objects can be detected extremely fast. It functions as a replacement of the pilot’s visual assessment of the situation.

The radar systems and components of HENSOLDT are used on board aircraft, ships, satellites, and in ground stations. Some of the platforms, which are equipped with HENSOLDT’s devices, are the Eurofighter combat aircraft, the US Navy’s littoral combat ships, the TanDEM-X satellites, and the frigates of the German Navy. In addition, HENSOLDT delivers ATC radar systems and transponders to armed forces and air traffic control (ATC) authorities all over the world.
