Defence Ministers of Russia and India Discussed the Start of Joint Production of Kalashnikov Guns in India
NEW DELHI, India, (BulgarianMilitary.com) – A mass production of Kalashnikov submachine guns is determined to start in India, next year. This was one of the topics discussed during today’s meeting of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military technical cooperation, held in New Delhi, India, reported the Russian Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin, after the session, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
During the meeting co-chaired by the defence ministers of the two countries- Sergei Shoigu of Russia and Nirmala Sitharaman of India, both collocutors held talks on a draft program for military-technical collaboration till 2030. Another topic was the organization of the production process of Ka-226T multirole helicopter on the territory of India, explains further Russia’s Deputy Minister of Defence.
On the background of the repeated request by India’s army to acquire the latest weapons in order to meet its needs, today’s talks also covered and detailed consideration of the steps toward the start of Kalashnikov submachine guns production in India, starting in 2019.
The participants in the session paid close attention to the quality of after-sales services. They also have signed an agreement to establish a Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military and military technical cooperation, which to complete the restructuring of the intergovernmental commission and to allow establishing closer cooperation in the defence area.
Previously, the Russian Minister of Defence Sergey Shoigu said that the meeting of the Russian-Indian inter-governmental commission on military and technical cooperation, which was held today, aims to sum up the results of the commission’s work in the current year, as well as to be found out prompt and effective ways in the implementation of the agreements secured by the leaders of both countries, during the visitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in India in October 2018. He also stated that the regular meetings of the Russian and Indian leaders are “a vivid proof of constructive bilateral relations.”
During the talks with his Indian counterpart Nirmala Sitharaman, Russia’s Defence Minister defined the level of cooperation in military technology transfer between India and Russia as ‘unprecedented’, adding that Russia is ready to enhance its military-technical collaboration with India in the long term. He expressed his confidence in the strong ties with New Delhi in the area of armament and military hardware transfer, saying that “no other state cooperates with India… as close as Russia.”

Sergey Shoigu pointed out as an example the signed with India contracts for the delivery of S-400 Triumf air defense missile systems and Project 11356 frigates, despite the external pressure.
