Leonardo’s Falco EVO RPAS Is Part of the Surveillance Research Programme of Frontex
ROME, Italy (BulgarianMilitary.com) – The Remotely-Piloted Air System (RPAS) of L eonardo, Falco EVO, in its maritime patrol version, has been deployed from Lampedusa airport (Lampedusa Island, Italy) as part of the surveillance research programme of Frontex. Frontex is assessing the surveillance capability of medium-altitude, long-endurance RPAS, including the relevant endurance and cost efficiency. The European agency selected the Italian company Leonardo through a service contract tender for drone operations for maritime surveillance across the Italian and Maltese civil airspace. The present agreement provides for 300 flight hours and it could be further extended into a longer-term agreement.

The Falco EVO unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system is a persistent unmanned aircraft, used for surveillance and able to carry a wide selection of multispectral sensors suites allowing reliable Real Time stand-off target detection, identification, classification, and shadowing, becoming a valuable information and intelligence node integral with any national C4I network. The range of Falco EVO UAV is more than 200 km.
The deployed Falco EVO variant features a high-definition InfraRed (IR) electro-optical system, a new propulsion system based on a heavy-fuel engine, an Automatic Identification System (AIS), a Beyond-Line-Of-Sight (BLOS) satellite data-link system, and a complete communications relay suite.
