Russia’s Minister of Defence Attended the 5th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus in Singapore

SINGAPORE, Singapore, (BulgarianMilitary.com) – On 19 October, the Russian Minister of Defence Sergey Shoigu arrived in Singapore for an official visit during which he held talks with the Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen and attended the 5th Defence Ministers’ Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – ADMM-Plus and ASEAN eight Dialogue Partners (Australia, the People’s Republic of China, the Russian Federation, the Republic of India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and the U.S.), learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

On Saturday, speaking on the sidelines of this years’ annual event in Singapore, which is defined to be “the multilateral security mechanism in the Asia-Pacific,” Sergey Shoigu called on the ASEAN member-states and their partners to join in the humanitarian and recovery mission held in Syria. He stated that its stabilization is issue that concerns and the members of the Asian-pacific Region, saying that their joint efforts can normalize the situation in Syria, by providing favorable conditions for refugees to come back home, as well prevent the expansion of the Islamic State terrorist group in the Asian-Pacific Region. He insisted on assuming antiterrorist measures “with the central coordinating role of the United Nations and the norms of international law observed, without hidden agendas and double standards.”

Sergey Shoigu, also called on the armed forces of the ADMM-Plus countries actively to use their potential and to cooperate in anti-terror and peacemaking operations in order to ensure peace and stability in the region. According to him, such cooperation will be successful in areas including the fight against international terrorism, maritime security, humanitarian assistance, emergency response, military medicine, peacekeeping operations, humanitarian demining and information security

Speaking further on the subject of Syria, the Russian Defence Minister said that Russia’s Aerospace Defence Forces made more than 40,000 flights over the course of the operation in Syria and delivered strikes at about 122,000 terrorist facilities. He said that 6,500 hectares of Syrian territory had been cleared from mines, by Russian engineers. Sergey Shoigu also pointed out that over 2,500 settlements from all over the country joined the reconciliation process, due to the efforts of the Russian center for reconciliation of the conflicting sides and added that the peace in Syria was being actively restored, with particular attention being paid now to humanitarian activity and assisting refugees to return in their homes.

During the meeting with Singapore’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, Sergei Shoigu stated that there are good prospects for cooperation between the both countries on security in Pasific Rim. Russian Defence Minister also informed his Singaporean counterpart about the work of the International Mine Action Centre of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, saying that “Russia is always ready to share this experience.”
