General Andrey Botsev (Bulgaria) Attended a NATO Military Committee Conference

The meeting was hosted by the Chief of the Polish General Staff, Lieutenant General Rajmund Andrzejczak and it enabled the Chiefs of Defence to meet and discuss issues of importance to the Alliance.

The covered at the Conference topics included Readiness, Responsiveness and Modernisation. It was also provided recommendations for future NATO operations, exercises and activities including closer cooperation with International Organisations. Within the framework of the topic related to the modernization of the Alliance it was discussed the progress in the process of adaptation of the NATO Command Structure and in the functional review of its Headquarters, which is being conducted. It was also commented the NATO operations and missions, which are being carried out at the moment, as well as the military contribution to the Political Guidance on 2019 NATO Defence Planning. The development of a new military strategy of NATO and the initiatives related to the improvement of the capabilities of the North Atlantic Alliance for deterrence and defence were also discussed.

At the end of the conference the next Director General of the International Military Staff of the Alliance was selected. The new Director General will be Lieutenant-General Hans-Verner Viermann and he will undertake his new functions in the summer next year.

The Military Committee Conference was led by Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. In each session he was supported by General Curtis M. Scaparrotti (Supreme Allied Commander Europe or SACEUR) and General André Lanata (Supreme Allied Commander Transformation or SACT).
