Bahrain’s Request for Tactical Missiles Approved by the U.S. State Department

WASHINGTON, the USA (BulgarianMilitary.com) – On 28 September, a news release published on the website of the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, informs about the State Department’s approval of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Bahrain. The issued announcement says that, the same day, DSCA has delivered to the Congress the required certification notifying the latter of a possible sale. Under the potential deal, Bahrain will purchase U.S. Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System Unitary Rocket Pods and Army Tactical Missiles System (ATACMS) Unitary missiles worth $300 million, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

Bahrain has requested to acquire, through the FMS program, one hundred twenty GMLRS (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System) M31 Unitary Rocket Pods (six rockets per pod for a total amount of seven hundred twenty) as well as one hundred ten ATACMS (Army Tactical Missiles System) M57 T2K Unitary missiles. As a prime contractor of the proposed sale is appointed to be Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control business unit, which is located in Grand Prairie, Texas. The work on the delivery won’t require additional representatives of the contractor in the U.S. or in Bahrain. Under the terms of the deal, LM MFC will be also responsible to provide and the requested by the Kingdom of Bahrain, support services, such as training equipment, personnel training, software development, U.S. Government and contractor engineering as well as technical and logistics support services, publications and other associated logistical and program support elements.

The published DSCA announcement also states the goals of the potential deal, as for the U.S. they are to enhance the objectives of the foreign policy, to improve the national security and to guarantee the U.S. important role as a force that provides political stability and economic progress in the Middle East

On the other hand, Bahrain armed forces will use the tactical missiles’ capabilities to improve the defense within its territory and to keep back regional threats. The acquisition of the M31 GMLRS Unitary Rocket Pods and ATACMS T2K Unitary Missile will provide greater security for Bahrain’s crucial oil and natural gas infrastructure and national events.

The M31 GMLRS is low-cost precision munition used with the M270 multiple launch rocket artillery systems. It is equipped with GPS technology for reducing the collateral damage risks.

The Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) T2K is a low-cost long-range unitary surface-to-surface missile, capable of operating in various weather conditions with range of up to approximately 300 km.
