U.S. Secretary of the Army Visited a Joint Bulgarian – U.S. Military Exercise at Novo Selo

NOVO SELO, Bulgaria, (BulgarianMilitary.com) – On 25 September, hundreds of Bulgarian and U.S. servicemen took part in a joint military training between the both countries. On the territory of Novo Selo training area, yesterday, military from the Land Forces of Bulgaria and the U.S. demonstrated their defense skills and actions in front of the attending official quests – the U.S. Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper and the Commander of the Bulgarian Land Forces, Major General Mihail Popov, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

The exercise involved tasks for conducting defensive actions, carried out by a mechanized infantry platoon, therefore the Land Forces, participating in it, were provided with a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle and two Apache helicopters.

This is the first visit of the U.S. Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper at Novo Selo training polygon. Expressing his first impressions, he affirmed the great importance of the joint training in order to ensure enhanced military capabilities. In his opinion, the collaboration between the U.S. and Bulgarian Land Forces, improves and their interoperability.

During their meeting at Novo Selo, Mark Esper and Major General Mihail Popov discussed and the possible opportunities for planning other joint military exercises for a longer period of time, that intend to build up capabilities of their units.

Major General Mihail Popov said that the Bulgarian – U.S. training provided the Land Forces of both countries with a very good chance to improve their abilities in the field of interoperability, something that will ensure them to fulfill the country’s obligations as a NATO member state. He saw the visit of the U.S. Secretary of the Army as a message to the U.S. military, their commanders and to the Bulgarian Land Force servicemen, as well, showing the importance of the joint exercise and actions held at Novo Selo training area and in the training centers in Germany.

“We have very good cooperation, we have established good long-lasting relations and I am convinced that this will continue in the future,”
said the Commander of the Bulgarian Land Forces.
