The drill is held with the participation of the armed forces of Member States and NATO partners from the Black Sea region, such as the Republic of Bulgaria, the United States, Albania, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro. In particular, up to 700 servicemen and 100 units combat, transport and special equipment, from all mentioned participants, are involved in the exercises.

For a first time the Bulgarian Land Forces are responsible for the preparation, planning and conducting of the training. The exercise is planned by the deputy commanding officer of the Land Forces, Brigadier Valery Tsolov, and conducted by Colonel Stoyan Shopov, Head of Staff of 2nd mechanized brigade – Stara Zagora. The director of the training is Lieutenant Colonel Atanas Georgiev, Deputy Head of Staff of 2nd mechanized brigade and a Commanding officer of the Multinational battalion is Lieutenant Colonel, Nikolay Aleksandrov, Commanding officer of 31st mechanized brigade.

The subject of this year’s exercise in Novo Selo training area, is “Multinational mechanized battalion to assist the local authorities by conducting stabilizing actions in its appointed area for responsibility”. The „Platinum Lion 18“ exercise involve conducting company tactical trainings, tactical battle shooting trainings of defensive and offensive subject and peacekeeping operations.

In general, Platinum Lion Exercise is a Peace Keeping Organization that operates on a battalion level. It is a Counter Insurgency event that aims to provide quality, organized training in a realistic environment. Its purposes are to strengthen relationships in a corporative training environment, to give understanding of partner nation tactics, techniques and procedures and to increase interoperability with allied and partner forces.The exercise involves designated military units from Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia.
