It is being discussed by the Bundeswehr the possibility of giving the citizens of the European member states the right to serve in the Bundeswehr due to staff shortage. If this option is approved, all Europeans will be able to serve in the Bundeswehr, learned BulgarianMilitary.com

That was announced by the national daily paper Die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, quoted by Focus Information Agency.

Actually the option for giving the European citizens the right to serve in the German Army was set in the 2016 White Paper: Strategic Review and Way Ahead on Security Policy and the Future of the Bundeswehr. The new thing now is that this right is supplemented by a new strategy for development of the human resources.

A spokesman of the Ministry of Defence of Germany stated, “The Bundeswehr will be expanded. For that purpose we need qualified personnel. That is why we carefully consider all possible options.”

However the social democrat Karl-Heinz Brunner said that he cannot imagine foreigners to serve in the German Army and commented, “If the inclusion of citizens of other countries is allowed against a German passport, we risk the Bundeswehr to turn into a kind of an army of soldiers of fortune.”

The personnel shortage has been an issue for the Bundeswehr for years, and the main reason for that is the cancelling of the obligatory military service.

“We may develop contemporary models within the framework of the European freedom of movement law,” underlined Florian Han, spokesman on defence matters of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria.

Alice Weidel, the faction leader of Alternative for Germany, commented, “The governing politicians have absolutely lost their common sense.”

The Bundeswehr is the German unified armed forces, including their civil administration and procurement authorities. It is divided into a military part and a civil part with the armed forces administration. The military part of the federal defense force involves the German Army, the German Navy, the German Air Force, the Joint Support Service, the Joint Medical Service, and the Cyber and Information Space Command.
