Yesterday, 16th July 2018, Saab announced its new anti-ship missile system RBS15 Gungnir. That next generation anti-ship missile system is being showcased for the first time at the Farnborough International Airshow 2018, learned BulgarianMilitary.com

Görgen Johansson, Senior Vice President and head of Saab business area Dynamics commented, “RBS15 Gungnir is offered in both air-launched and surface-launched configurations that offer greatly improved capabilities, compared to other missile systems on the market. With an improved range to more than 300 km and highly advanced target seeker, it gives the capability to engage any target, in all conditions.”

The all-weather capability of the RBS15 missile family is kept with the new system. However, the next generation design involves the potential for future growth as well. The mission flexibility is increased through an option that allows engaging of targets from the air, land and sea, thanks to which coordinated attacks, with multiple missiles, against a wide range of naval and land-based targets may be performed.

Saab manufactures the RBS15 missile family jointly with Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG. Among the operators of that system are reported to be various navies, coastal batteries and air forces from Sweden, Germany, Finland, Poland, Thailand, Croatia.

The name Gungnir comes from the Scandinavian mythology and refers to the Norse god Odin’s spear that never missed its target. RBS15 Gungnir is the system level name. The missile is called the RBS15 Mk4 Air in its air-launched configuration.

In March and April 2017 Saab signed contracts with the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) for the production of the latest version of the RBS15 and deliveries are expected to start in the mid-2020s.
