The designer and maker of the first anti-fogging heated goggles in the world with integrated rechargeable batteries, Abom, Inc., announced on Monday (9th July 2018) that the company has received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award for performing a feasibility study for the purposes of developing innovative tactical active anti-fogging goggles or spectacles in a smaller form factor in comparison to traditional goggles, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.
The $148,495 award was received from United States Special Operations Command under the SBIR Program of the U.S. Department of Defence. The SBIR program is a U.S. Government program, coordinated by the Small Business Administration. The SBIR Program is organized in three phases. Phase I involves feasibility studies. During Phase II prototypes are developed and demonstrated. Phase III is for the commercialization of the developed products. So, if Abom later receives a Phase II SIBR under this topic, fully functioning prototypes of a tactical active anti-fogging goggles or spectacles will be made and demonstrated by the company in a simulated operational environment as reported by the company.
It is well known that the Special Operations Forces in their missions are exposed to extreme temperatures, heat, humidity, winds, and environmental particularities and therefore, combat eyewear protection is a must. In addition, fogging or condensation may form inside protective eyewear due to quickly changing environments or physical exertion, which leads to bad visibility and restricted functionality. Therefore, the goal of the feasibility study will be development of tactical active anti-fogging goggle or spectacle system, which will improve the situational awareness, operational readiness, and sustained human performance and effectiveness while operating in difficult environmental conditions. The preferred tactical goggles or spectacles shall not involve passive anti-fog technologies such as coatings against condensation. Power supplies shall be self-contained in the spectacle/goggle system.
Abom, Inc. was founded in 2014 and is managed by a team of scientists, designers and business professionals developing leading-edge technology. The company has introduced the first microcontroller-managed heated fog-free goggles in the world with integrated rechargeable batteries.
