On 21st June 2018, the Ministry of Defence of Russia announced that a new Kasta 2-2 (Casta 2E2 or Kasta 2E2) all-round three-coordinate radar has been delivered to the Russian Central Military District’s (MD) air defence division in the Samara Region, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

The 360 degree surveillance radar station Kasta 2-2 is a modern Russian radar system developed for air control. It defines the range, azimuth, flight level and specifications of aircraft and cruise missiles. Objects flying at low and extremely low altitudes, stealth targets and moving objects on the water surface are also detected by the Kasta 2-2. Stealth-technology air targets belong to the scope of that radar system thanks to its superior performance.

The Kasta 2-2 system consists of one antenna and three vehicles. One truck is used for the antenna and its peripheral equipment, a second truck is a command post vehicle, and a diesel-electric power plant is mounted on a third truck. Two single-axle trailers carry additional supporting equipment.

The antenna may be optionally installed on a standard 50 m pylon, which leads to displacement of the horizon of the radar and hence to increased detection altitude up to 6 km and distance of 150 km.

The development of the Kasta 2E system was initiated in the former Soviet Union for the purposes of low-level surveillance.
