1st European Solution against Heat Guided Missiles of Indra & Elettronica Group

Last week, on 6th June, Indra and Elettronica Group announced in a press release within the framework of AOC Electronic Warfare Europe event in Lausanne (Switzerland) that they have joined forces for developing the first completely European self-protection solution for defence against heat guided missiles. That self-protection solution, named EuroDIRQM, is a next generation Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) based Direct Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) system appropriate for protection of rotary and fixed wing aircrafts.

The Spanish company, Indra, is the absolute leader in the IT sector in Spain and in Latin America. It offers end to end-to-end technology solutions in many field, among which is ‘Defence and Security’. For its part, Elettronica Group, headquartered in Rome, Italy, is a leader in the field of electronic warfare

The two companies are ready with the first prototype of the EuroDIRQM system, and the QCL operational ground tests with the assistance of the Italian Air Force are already a fact. They were carried out in March and were successful.

Quantum cascade is the latest innovation in laser technology being introduced for next-generation systems in all fields, the DIRCM system is a self-protection airborne protection against heat-seeking missiles, and especially against MANPADS missile. The Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPADS) is a surface-to-air missile, guided by the heat of the aircraft, and one operator is enough for it to be easily controlled.
