Mikael Franzén, head of Gripen Brazil Business Unit announced that wide area and head-up displays of AEL made in Brazil for the Saab Gripen E/F will be offered as a potential cockpit upgrade to purchasers of the next generation jet fighters, reported FlightGlobal.
The $85 million Gripen E or Gripen E/F has all-new avionics and software that allows quick modifications without extensive layovers. It’s completely NATO interoperable and includes NCW technology (Network Centric Warfare technology) for advanced data communications, dual data links, satellite communications, and video links.
AEL said that the latest versions of both the wide area and head-up displays are being evaluated at the moment by Saab through Safety of Flight (SOF) Testing.
Single-engined Gripen E ‘Smart Fighter’ jets have been ordered only by Sweden and Brazil by now. Brazil has also ordered 8 two-seat F-models.
The Brazilian Air Force’s order at the amount of $5.4 billion, which shall be completed between 2021 and 2024, includes 36 Gripen fighters that have integrated several changes in comparison to the version for the Swedish Air Force. The Brazilian versions include AEL Sistemas’ (defense electronics company – a subsidiary of Elbit Systems based in Brazil) 19in by 8in wide-area touchscreen Instead of three multifunction displays.
