On 6th March, WFEL, the established world leader in design, manufacturing, and supply of rapidly-deployable tactical military bridging, announced that they have completed the first delivery of bridges for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) under the Land 155 Enhanced Gap Crossing Capability Project. This part of the Project covers the supply of Medium Girder Bridges (MGBs) and Dry Support Bridges (DSBs) and involves some of the first configurations of the DSB launching vehicle on a fully-armoured Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicle (RMMV) 45m 10 x 10 chassis.

“WFEL’s long-standing relationship with the Australian Defence Force began over 30 years ago, when they chose our Medium Girder Bridges. We are delighted to continue to support them today, this time not only with further MGBs, but with a significant capability enhancement through the purchase of the latest mechanised DSB. The adoption of the DSB not only provides the ADF’s Manoeuvre Commanders with the ability to cross significant wet or dry gaps quickly and efficiently, it allows a level of inter-operability with an ever-growing user base.

This significant and growing installed base of DSB equipment, allied to our fully-operational production line, ensures that WFEL’s customers have a high level of confidence not only in our products but also in our continued through-life support and spares availability,” said the Chief Executive of WFEL – Mr. Wilson in relation to this milestone of the Project.

The bearing capacity of the DSBs is over 120 tonnes. They may be launched within 90 minutes by only eight persons.

The supplied MGBs are double-storied, link-reinforced and may span up to 49m. Additional portable Pier and Span equipment is foreseen for them for possible construction of bridges of up to 76m.

Both bridging systems are intended as temporary infrastructure for the needs of the ADF’s Combat Support and Disaster Relief operations and are supplied with walkways that allow separation of pedestrian and vehicle traffic flows.

The Land 155 Project is expected to be completed by September 2018.

MOSCOW, the Russian Federation (BulgarianMilitary.com)On Sunday (20th January), a day after the U.S. Navy’s guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook began its north-bound transit of the Dardanelles Strait, moving towards the Black Sea, Alexei Pushkov, a member of Russia’s Upper House Commission on Information Policy, stated on his Twitter page that the U.S. warships should keep away from Russia’s coastline, Reuters reported, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

The statement of the U.S. Navy released on Saturday (19th January) says that the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer heads to Black Sea  in order “to conduct maritime security operations and enhance regional maritime stability, combined readiness and naval capability.”

The same day, the National Defence Control Center of the Russian Defence Ministry said that the Russia’s Black Sea Fleet began to monitor the movements of the U.S. guided-missile destroyer, shortly after it entered into the Black Sea (at 8.50 p.m. Moscow time). The monitoring involves the guard ship Pytlivy as well as electronic and technical means of the Fleet.

The Russian Defence Control Center adds that in accordance with the Montreux international convention, the the U.S. warship cannot stay in the Black Sea for more than 21 days.

Regarding the recent events, the Russian prominent senator Alexei Pushkov, on Sunday, rejected the U.S. statement by saying that the frequent U.S. warships’ visits to the Black Sea are not motivated by security but by domestic politics, and added they should stay away from the Russian coast.

He writes: “They flaunt their flag, send us a signal, and appease their own senators, who are demanding they send a whole military fleet to the Black Sea. They should keep away from our coastline.”

Last week, the arrest of the 24 Ukrainian sailors captured along with their ships in the Kerch Strait, in November last year, and later, accused of illegally crossing into Russian territory, was extended by three months. Repeatedly, the EU and U.S. have called on Russia to release the sailors, but Kremlin’s response is that they must be put on trial. So far, no date has been set for the trial.

The commanding officer of the U.S. guided-missile destroyer Donald Cook, Cmdr. Matthew J. Powel commented that the U.S. Navy continues to support its allies “in defence of shared regional interests and maritime stability.” According to him their arrival into the Black Sea is a demonstration of the navy’s interoperability while pursuiting common security objectives that enable them “to respond effectively to future crises or deterring aggression.”

If Israel is behind the incident, it is apparently the first attack in Syria since Chief of Staff Kochavi took office, and the attack took place while Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting Chad. The Al Quds Al Arabi newspaper reported on Sunday that Russia had conveyed to Israel a message that it intended to renovate Damascus International Airport with logistical and technical aspects. According to the same source, Russia informed Israel that it would not be able to continue air strikes against sites near the airport to which arms shipments from Iran arrive. According to the Russians, the same attacks are causing airlines from the region who want to return to Syria to reconsider.
