Nexter pushes T40 turret development

Nexter Systems of France has now completed two of its T40M two-person turrets armed with the CTAI 40 mm Case Telescoped Armament System (CTAS) and roof-mounted remote weapon station (RWS), the company has confirmed to Jane’s.

These have been installed on various platforms for trials in France and overseas, including an AMX-10RC 6×6 armoured car, Véhicule Blindé de Combat d’Infanterie (VBCI) 8×8 infantry fighting vehicle, and 8×8 Patria Armoured Modular Vehicle.

The T40M is the first of a family of T40 turrets being developed by Nexter Systems as a private venture, with the next version being an unmanned model that could be completed in 2018. This will enable Nexter to offer potential customers the option of a manned or unmanned turret depending on their operational requirements.

Both configurations have their advantages and disadvantages, but the unmanned T40 turret has no basket and so takes up less room in the vehicle hull, where space is always at a premium.

Nexter is building a further development of the T40M turret for the French Army’s Jaguar 6×6 reconnaissance vehicle, and this will have a pod of two MBDA Missile Moyenne Portée anti-tank guided weapons (ATGWs) integrated in the right side of the turret, which are elevated prior to launch.

Nexter can also offer alternative ATGWs mounted either side of the turret, and there is flexibility in the sighting systems offered.

The T40M has 60 rounds of ready-use 40 mm ammunition for the CTAS, and mounted on the roof is an RWS armed with a 7.62 mm machine gun that can also be slaved to the main gun.
